The Standard Formula

Volumetric Weight (KG) = L (cm) × W (cm) × H (cm) ÷ 5,000

This applies to international air freight through most cargo carriers and freight forwarders. The divisor 5,000 is the IATA standard for cargo. DHL, FedEx, and UPS Express international services also use 5,000 for most international routes. Domestic or regional services may use different divisors — verify before calculating.

Airlines sell aircraft hold capacity by space, not scale weight. A light but bulky shipment occupies space that could carry heavier freight generating more revenue. Volumetric weight is a pricing mechanism that compensates the carrier for the space occupied, ensuring lightweight bulky cargo isn’t effectively subsidized by dense cargo.

Can I negotiate the DIM divisor with freight forwarders?

For very high-volume shippers, some forwarders will negotiate divisors above 5,000 (e.g., 6,000) for consistently low-density cargo — effectively reducing the volumetric weight charge. This is only relevant at significant monthly volume (500+ KG per month). For most importers, the standard 5,000 divisor applies without negotiation.

Does sea freight LCL use volumetric weight?

Sea freight LCL uses CBM (cubic meters) billing, which is an equivalent volume-based concept.
