How to Use a CBM Calculator for International Shipping from China

How to Use a CBM Calculator for International Shipping from China

CBM — cubic meters — is the unit that determines how LCL sea freight shipments are priced, when an FCL container becomes more economical, and how carriers bill cargo that’s too light for weight-based calculations. If you’re importing from China, CBM shows up constantly: in freight quotes, packing list requirements, and container load planning. This guide explains the formula, how to calculate it accurately for different shipment types, and how to use it to make better freight decisions.

For up-to-date numbers on a specific lane while you read this guide, you can check current China to Nigeria air freight rates — pricing is refreshed live from the carrier feed.

The CBM Formula

In meters: CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m)

In centimeters: CBM = L (cm) × W (cm) × H (cm) ÷ 1,000,000

Carton Dimensions CBM per Carton 20 Cartons 50 Cartons
60 × 50 × 40 cm 0.120 CBM 2.4 CBM 6.0 CBM
40 × 30 × 30 cm 0.036 CBM 0.72 CBM 1.8 CBM
80 × 60 × 50 cm 0.240 CBM 4.8 CBM 12.0 CBM
35 × 28 × 22 cm 0.022 CBM 0.44 CBM 1.1 CBM

For shipments with mixed carton sizes, calculate CBM for each size separately and sum the totals. Always measure your packed export cartons, not the product dimensions — factory packaging adds meaningful volume.

How CBM Drives LCL Sea Freight Cost

Sea freight LCL (Less than Container Load) is priced by CBM. Carriers charge based on whichever generates more revenue: volume-based (CBM rate) or weight-based (KG rate, typically around $0.20–$0.30/KG for ocean). For most consumer goods shipments, volume-based billing applies — your cargo density is usually below the 1 ton/CBM threshold where weight billing overtakes volume billing.

Indicative LCL rates all-in landed (China to destination, 2026):

Destination Rate per CBM (all-in) Min. charge
UK (Felixstowe) $240–$420 1 CBM
Germany (Hamburg) $185–$320 1 CBM
USA (Los Angeles) $200–$380 1 CBM
Australia (Sydney/Melbourne) $280–$480 1 CBM
Canada (Vancouver) $200–$360 1 CBM
South Africa (Durban) $220–$380 1 CBM

The LCL vs FCL Tipping Point: How to Calculate It

The break-even CBM at which an FCL becomes cheaper per CBM than LCL:

FCL break-even CBM = FCL all-in cost ÷ LCL rate per CBM

Example — China to UK:

  • LCL all-in rate: $380/CBM
  • FCL 20-foot all-in (ocean + customs + delivery): $5,500
  • Break-even: $5,500 ÷ $380 = 14.5 CBM

Below 14.5 CBM: LCL is cheaper. Above 14.5 CBM: FCL gives a lower per-CBM cost. Recalculate each shipment — rates shift seasonally and by route.

Container Capacities: What Fits

Container Type Internal Volume Practical Cargo Capacity Max Payload
20-foot standard 33.2 CBM 25–28 CBM ~28,000 KG
40-foot standard 67.7 CBM 55–60 CBM ~28,000 KG
40-foot high cube 76.4 CBM 62–68 CBM ~28,000 KG

Practical capacity is lower than internal volume because cargo requires bracing and loading space. Heavy, dense cargo (metal parts, machinery) may hit the weight limit before the volume limit — verify both when planning FCL loads.

CBM and Amazon FBA Planning

Amazon FBA receiving limits are often expressed in cubic feet (US) or units per shipment rather than CBM. For reference: 1 CBM = 35.3 cubic feet. If your FBA shipment plan in Seller Central shows a cubic feet limit, divide by 35.3 to convert to CBM and verify against your calculated carton volume before booking freight.

FAQ

How do I calculate CBM for irregularly shaped items?

Use the dimensions of the bounding box — the smallest rectangular box that fully encloses the packed item. Carriers measure and bill based on the outer dimensions of the carton or packed item, regardless of the product’s internal shape.

Does CBM affect air freight pricing?

Indirectly, yes — through volumetric weight. Air freight volumetric weight = L × W × H (cm) ÷ 5,000. A 1 CBM shipment = 1,000,000 cm³ ÷ 5,000 = 200 KG volumetric weight. If actual weight is under 200 KG, you pay for 200 KG. CBM and volumetric weight are two expressions of the same concept applied to different freight modes.

What is the minimum CBM for LCL shipments?

Most freight providers charge a minimum equivalent to 1 CBM or a fixed minimum dollar charge per bill of lading. For very small volumes under 0.5 CBM, air freight total cost often competes with or beats LCL once all LCL surcharges (documentation, handling, customs, deconsolidation) are included.
